Michel de M’Uzan, born December 21, 1921 in Paris and died June 17, 2014, was a French physician, psychoanalyst and writer. He came from a family of intellectuals and studied medicine before specializing in psychoanalysis.
Trained by major figures such as Daniel Lagache and Jacques Lacan, de M’Uzan quickly established himself as an influential theorist in the field. One of the highlights of his work was his contribution to the study of the creative process.
Michel de M’Uzan was particularly interested in the links between artistic creation and unconscious mechanisms. He developed the notion of operant thought, which describes a mode of thinking characterized by an apparent absence of phantasmatic life in certain individuals, notably those in technical or scientific professions.
This notion has subsequently been widely debated and integrated into various psychoanalytic studies. De M’Uzan has also made significant contributions to the understanding of death and mourning in psychoanalysis.
His reflection on the work of the negative is another salient aspect of his work that continues to inspire theorists and practitioners alike.
Beyond his theoretical research, Michel de M’Uzan also enjoyed a reputation as an excellent clinician, known for his empathetic approach and his attentive listening to patients.
