Angelo HESNARD (1886-1969) was a French psychiatrist and psychoanalyst of major importance in the introduction and development of psychoanalysis in France.
Born in Pontivy, he took an early interest in the work of Sigmund Freud and worked for its recognition in French medical circles.
After graduating in medicine, HESNARD went to Zurich and then Vienna, where he deepened his knowledge of psychiatry and psychoanalysis. He translated many of Freud’s works into French, helping to spread his ideas throughout the French-speaking world.
In 1927, together with René Laforgue, he published La Psychanalyse des névroses et des psychoses, which marked a milestone in the acceptance of psychoanalysis in France.
An important aspect of his work is his role during the First World War. Angelo HESNARD was one of the first military physicians to recognize and treat what were then known as war neuroses, better known today as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
He used psychoanalytic techniques to treat soldiers traumatized by their experiences at the front, a relatively new and revolutionary approach at the time.
His pioneering work on war neuroses greatly contributed to the evolution of psychiatric care for combatants, and left its mark on the history of military medicine.
